The essence of Te Arawa – what Te Arawa is armed with to go into the future. Te Arawa Waka Taua was carved for the people of Te Arawa and resides on the shores of Rotorua. The waka was used in the commemoration of the 1990 Commonwealth Games in San Diego and is proudly displayed by Te Arawa in times of celebration, and still active in ceremonial events such as in the Millennium celebrations and in local calendar events such as the Wooden Boat Day in Rotoiti.

Hono ki Aotearoa was carved in a short period of time when Grant was invited to visit the annual Hawaiian Canoe Festival to observe, initially, later to become a participant in carving the waka invited to the annual Canoe Festival.
